Front line work at the edges of local government - is innovation still possible when resources are withdrawn?

Our Life and North West Together We Can FREE Seminar

Thursday 24th May at St Sebastian's Community Centre Salford

9:30  - 1.30pm including Lunch

Keynote Speaker at our Seminar is Dr. Catherine Durose, Senior Research Fellow, Department of Politics and Public Policy, De Montfort University who will report back on her research in 2005-6 with front line workers from Salford City Council which has been followed up in 2012.

The workers’ roles were very varied and included: community development, neighbourhood development, health improvement, and street environment. Catherine explored with them their perception of neighbourhood working, issues they encountered everyday, recent examples of projects and initiatives, and their perspectives on wider public sector reform.

Catherine was keen to explore with these workers whether in the context of resource constraint, front line workers will fall back on bureaucratic ways of working or instead facilitate action by working with people, rather than doing things to or for them.

Salford City Council has a well established reputation for supporting communities through its Neighbourhood Management approach to partnership working, which employs a small team of frontline workers including community development workers. Recent initiatives from the government such as Community First funding have challenged the Council, its staff and communities to work in a different way.

We will also have Case Studies from community organisations from Salford and St Peter’s Partnerships Tameside, about their experiences working with the public sector in neighbourhoods in times of economic recession and policy changes.

Register your place for this seminar by Monday 21st May by going to the Event Booking Form on the right.
